Résumé : |
Here is a comprehensive study of the early history and architecture of Islam. Its range is from Islam’s origin in the 7th century ad to the year 1500, when Muslim occupation of Spain had ended and the Ottomans were laying the foundations for an empire in the Near East.
After an introductory account of European travellers and their reaction to the sites of Islam, the author devotes one chapter to a rapid survey of the historical development of Islam, thus paving the way for more detailed discussion of the surviving monuments. Using architectural history as a framework, he builds up a picture of the secular and religious life of the medieval Muslim and concludes with descriptions of palaces, shrines and mausolea - the grandest manifestations of Islam - notably the Alhambra, the Dome of the Rock and Mecca. Four visual stories portray in pictures Tamerlane’s capital at Samarkand, the Citadel of Aleppo, the art of Islamic calligraphy and the Mosque of Sultan Hasan in Cairo. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous photographs (most of them in colour), maps and diagrams. |
