Résumé : |
It does not usually occur to those who participate in current discussions of the church or the Christian in relation to the problems of society that there is any connection with Christian doctrine other than perhaps such Christian virtues as compassion, love, mercy, and justice. Aside from a few vulgar oaths and a few proper references to God, the debate and discussion are carried on in a completely secular atmosphere. Whatever the religious convictions of the participants, they rarely figure in the words spoken and almost never in the arguments presented.
This omission of any Christian doctrinal consideration is apt to be the case also in many discussions carried on in church and theological circles. Frequent references are made to social problems, a sociological framework is assumed, and the discussion is conducted in sociological or political terminology. A pastor or theological professor who will stand before an audience with open Bible and who will use its texts meaningfully to speak to the so-called social problems of the day is almost certain to find his audience startled before they are informed or convinced. It is this fact that makes such a literary effort as this one appropriate. While acknowledging a great debt to predecessors and frequently calling upon their help, this study will not be a historical study, but a biblical-theological one, employing the resources of historical, biblical, and systematic theology to discover and relate to the Chris¬tians of today what may be known to guide us in our thinking about civil government, especially as the church and the Christian relate to it. |
