Résumé : |
Over the past ten years, tens of thousands of copies of Professor John Bright’s A History of Israel have been used in schools, colleges and universities throughout the world, and it has been widely accepted as the standard textbook on its subject. However, even the best textbook falls out of date over such a length of time, as new discoveries are made and significant new insights are gained, and revision is called for. Hence the present volume, in which the text which first appeared in 1960 has been thoroughly reworked.
The main outline remains essentially unaltered and the general viewpoint fundamentally unchanged, but in other respects the new edition differs considerably from the old. The footnotes have been entirely revised to take into account the literature that has been produced in the last decade. Corrections have, of course, been made where new information required it. Furthermore, whole sections have been completely rewritten in the light of recent discussions. Thus, the sections on the Sinai covenant and the settlement in Palestine, the nature of prophecy in Israel, the problematical campaigns of Sennacherib in Palestine and the Samaritan schism, to mention only a few, appear in a new form. |
