In AD 70 the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome. As a result the prophecies given to national Israel concerning its expected restoration, which included the hope of a greater Temple to which the glory of God would return, had to be reformulated.
Were the promises to national Israel now to be fulfilled spiritually by the Church, making it the new Temple with its future in a heavenly new Jerusalem? or were the promises for Israel postponed, to be fulfilled literally in a rebuilt temple in a restored Jerusalem on earth? Jews and Christians have long debated these pivotal questions, and their differences have influenced modern-day political policy concerning Israel and the Temple Mount. For Orthodox Jews in Israel, the prophetic hope of a literal Temple has provoked a movement to rebuild it. Some Christians believe they should support Israel in relation to the future fulfillment of prophecy, while others contend that such prophetic belief is disastrous and has put the world on the road to Armageddon. In this revised and enlarged edition, Randall Price examines the concept of the eschatological Temple in the Old and New Testaments and provides a survey of the religious and political thought of those in the Temple movement, with a look at what has been accomplished thus far in the efforts to rebuild. |
