Résumé : |
This book is designed to be a companion volume to Translating The Word of God by John Beekman and John Callow. In it, the author, Kathleen Callow, has presupposed familiarity and knowledge of the larger work. In particular, this manual deals with the “discourse structure” of the receptor language.
The study of discourse structure is a relatively new field in linguistics, yet a vitally important one. With the meaning of the original determined, only half of the translator’s problem is solved. He still must reclothe the meaning of the original in the words and syntax- of the receptor language, so that it will be meaningful to those who speak and use this receptor language. With these new perspectives, a translator can insure that his work truly conveys the meaning of the source language. Without this “discourse structure,” a translation may very well convey a distorted message—one that is not correct. |
