Résumé : |
Focusing on the role of the Jewish believers in the first five centuries C.E., this important study re-examines some of the most foundational questions for our understanding of the formation of the early church. Who were the Jewish believers, and how did they understand themselves in relation to the Gentile believers and the Jewish community? Was the border area they occupied between Jew and Gentile a hospitable and welcoming one or was it one in which two incompatible identities clashed?
The essays in this volume question the traditional paradigm that saw an early “parting of the ways” between Judaism and Christianity and suggests instead that some Jewish believers in Jesus stayed closely integrated with the Jewish community even while their theology differed. The scholars in this collection focus on ethnicity rather than theology as the defining characteristic of what they mean by “Jewish believers in Jesus,” After discussing the identity of the Jewish believers and how they might have related to other Jews and to other Christians, the contributors examine the topic based on source material from the first to fifth centuries C.E. This book asks what can be learned about the Jewish believers in Jesus from the NewTestament and related material and from the literature of the Jewish believers themselves. Contributors examine the information found in the Greek, Latin, and Syriac fathers, as well as information found in other literary and archaeological sources, asking first how the original context may have affected texts we now study in search of history. This important work presents an exploration of the evidence for and ramifications of better understanding the ongoing presence of Jewish believers in Jesus and of their relationship with the Jews as well as the Gentile believers during the first five centuries of Christianity. |
