Résumé : |
Christianity without Fetishes is a penetrating analysis of the inculturation of Christianity in Africa. Eboussi Boulaga rejects the Christianity imposed upon and adopted by the African churches as a fetish manufactured in the West, but then goes on to mount a constructive and comprehensive African alternative.
“And from start to finish he is addressing, in a serious and radical way, the fundamental underpinnings of the inculturation debate—and ‘debate’ it truly is as churchpersons in Third World regions start vigorously to take issue with Rome and the European-American theological axis which still dominates theological discourse. “Perhaps nowhere is this debate more lively and demanding than in Africa, particularly among French-speaking scholars among whom Eboussi is a leader. Already long familiar with the cry for authenticity and négritude issuing from west and central African sources, theologians there have gone beyond the superficial critiques of colonialism and cultural imperialism to plumb the deeper dimensions of their Africanness in ways both creative and challenging. “And Eboussi, perhaps more than any other, given both his superb competence as a savant and philosopher and his own personal hegira, is able effectively to question the very nature of Christianity as we of the West have come to know it and impose it on Africa. “Once the depth of Eboussi’s critique begins to sink in, once one realizes that inculturation has precious little to do with liturgical vestments and musical instruments but rather with very basic worldviews, with basic human values and indeed with the sharing of power, then the significance of this book begins to dawn. This is a threatening book. It cuts to the quick. “What comes through more than anything else in this uniquely different approach to inculturation and to Christianity itself is the very authenticity of the project. Change is painful. The pain experienced by Eboussi and the anger it provoked signal us of the West that we, too, have yet much pain to endure if we are to transcend the sometimes petty dimensions of the inculturation debate.” (Simon E. Smith) |
