Résumé : |
The question of homosexual rights has hurst upon the scene as no other issue has in this decade. Instead of its usual role of a moralistic commentator on the sidelines, the church finds itself in the middle of the controversy. Entire denominations are in imminent danger of splitting right down the middle on this issue. Should self-affirmed, sexually active homosexuals be ordained as ministers in the church? Should they even be welcomed as fellow believers? What is the role in ethical guidance of reason, experience and the Holy Spirit? How shall we respond to new methods of interpreting the Bible which contradict our previous understanding of its teaching?
“Homosexuality and the Church” is the first comprehensive scholarly work that deals with the issue from an evangelical viewpoint. Dr. Lovelace presents the historic Christian position from Augustine and Aquinas through Luther and Calvin right up to Barth and Theilicke. He surveys and analyses current literature of the last 20 years that challenges this traditional position. All five biblical texts that speak specifically on homosexuality are considered extensively. Corollary passages from Scripture are discussed which bring more basic and underlying questions sharply into focus for today’s Christian, such as an overall morality of sex. |
