Résumé : |
Next to Luther, these are the two most influential German Reformers, who “deserve to be better known in English- speaking lands.”
This volume contains two highly important writings of the period of the Protestant Reformation. Philip Melanchthon’s Loci communes theologici, “the first Protestant dogmatics, as it is sometimes called, represents the work of a young man writing at the very beginning of the Luther Reformation.” It sketches “a common outline of the topics that you can pursue in your study of Holy Scripture.” It was Melanchthon’s belief that “only a Scriptural theology was the true theology.” Martin Bucer’s On the Kingdom of Christ, “the first Protestant treatise on social ethics, is the product of a mature man standing on the verge of old age. It reflects the experience of a lifetime in manifold labors for an actual reformation of the Church as well as society.” Containing “proposals for the introduction of the Reformation in England, it presents outlines of a series of fundamental laws designed to secure the observance of a Christian ‘discipline’ in all private and social life.” |
