Résumé : |
Are the narratives in the Bible essentially history or fiction? How were they intended by the biblical writers? Fundamental religionists and modern scholarship agree in attributing a literal or historiographical intent to the authors. The incredible elements in the Bible's stories are accepted by the former on the basis of faith in the divinely-revealed text; they are explained by scholars as resulting from the combination of differing traditions from disparate times into a badly-edited pastiche.
Applying the methods of contemporary literary criticism to biblical passages, Brichto reveals these narratives as ideological fiction crafted with consummate artistry. He offers his own grammar of the poetics of biblical narrative, showing how it can be used to illuminate a variety of specific texts. |
