| Résumé : | This volume of essays traces the story of the nation’s involvement with the Bible from the arrival of Saint Columba on Iona to the publication in the present decade of W. L. I.orimer's The New Testament in Scots. It is a story which as it unfolds will be seen to encompass every area of Scotland's past life - political, social, intellectual and literary as well as ecclesiastical and devotional. It is also a story which as it approaches today will appear to be losing momentum. The present volume offers no easy prescription for the recovery of the Bible's waning influence; but it should give the concerned reader the necessary historical perspective with which to reach his own conclusions on what ought to be or can be done about it. |
