Résumé : |
The story of Genesis is a story of a mar chosen by God and entrusted witf promises — the promise of a seed anc the promise of a land. The lessons learnec by Abraham through long waiting for i son and by Israel through longer waiting for the promised land are laid out in this book in such a way that they become lessons also for us. Prominent in the commentary is a revelation of the faithfulness of God as He fulfills His covenan promises in sometimes painful, öfter hard-to-understand historical events.
Dr. Stigers deals first with the historical events as corroborated and clarified b) archaeological discoveries, showing how archaeological evidence has served tc widen our knowledge of ancient biblical history. Studies of the nonbiblical writ ings of nations contemporary to the patriarchs reveal customs that were similai to the customs revealed in biblical narrative and thus give witness to the authenticity of the Genesis story. The author takes issue with higher critics, who have assigned various parts of Genesis to different writers. Convinced that Genesis is an integrated whole, he points out that differences occur, for example, in the various usages of the names of God on the basis of both progressive revelation and the distinctive purpose of each revelatory event. The “documentary hypothesis” is described as artificial and arbitrary. In preparing this exegetical and expository commentary, Dr. Stigers has made a careful study of the text. Frequent word studies clarify difficult passages and help one to see more fully the revelational intent of the historical narrative. The work is both analytical and reflective and will be of interest and use to all those who are interested in making a study of God’s story of “Beginnings.” |
