Résumé : |
Christian faith pins its hopes on the person and work of Christ. But those hopes are also inevitably bound up with the future of today's world. So it is not long before Christians ask how belief in Christ relates to the problems which are most pressing and inescapable for their times. These are the questions which Dr. Ruether deals with here, the questions of political commitment in the light of poverty and oppression, the question of anti-Judaism and religious intolerance, the question of justice for the female half of the human race, and the question of human survival in the face of chronic environmental abuse.
For Christians today, Dr. Ruether argues, there cannot be a final neutrality on these issues. One's portrait of Jesus ultimately expresses one's own normative statement about the Christian message to the world today. If there is no connection between the two, there is no need to continue to speak of Jesus as the Christ or the gospels as scripture. Yet the connection is by no means easy to make. Beginning with criticisms that the portraits of Jesus put forward most recently by Küng and Schillebeeckx are too much self-portraits of these two theologians, Dr. Ruether goes on to argue that the appeal to Christ and the Christian tradition is a complex one, at times double-edged, which needs constantly to be re-examined in the light of insights from the modern world and the prophetic element in Christianity. Above all, Christians need to be aware of the provisionality and incompleteness of what they too often take to be established and final. |
