Résumé : | The Jewish apocalyptic writings of the second century B.C. are marked by the appearance of new ideas and an expansion of the traditional teaching; clearly some outside influence was responsible for these new departures. Until recently it was customary to assume that Persian thought had provided the stimulus, but now there is general dissatisfaction with this theory. In this essay Dr Glasson purposes to “redress the balance and to show that it may be equally profitable to look in other directions”. He explores the parallels between Jewish and Greek literature, and gathers together in convenient form the evidence for Hellenic influence to be found in Jewish writings of the period. The student will be grateful to Dr Glasson for this scholarly investigation into the origin of some dominant apocalyptic themes. |
