Résumé : |
The book that we know as Exodus is a continuation of the narrative that began in Genesis. It never existed separately, but always as the second book of the five books of Moses.
Exodus consists of two parts: the description of Israel's miraculous departure from Egypt (1:115:21), and the making of the covenant (15:2240:38). The book as a whole gives us the revelation of the adoption of Israel as the Lord's people. Of this adoption the Exodus is the "negative," and the making of the covenant the "positive" aspect. Together they form the establishment of the theocracy (rule of God) in Israel. The purpose of the book is to describe the Lord's redemption and adoption of Israel and thus to show His faithfulness to the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to describe the fulfillment of His promise. To us the book speaks especially of the deliverance from the slavery of sin. The blood of the Passover lamb speaks to the Christian of the Lamb slain for us. In Pharaoh we see the progressive hardening of the heart and the power of the enemy, Satan, behind him, as well as a prediction of the ultimate destruction of Antichrist. Add to all of this the Ten Commandments, which as a "law of gratitude" is still of great importance to the church, and we cannot but see that Exodus with its truly human characters and its literary beauty, must be considered a book of inestimable value and significance. Dr. Gispen begins with an Introduction in which he discusses the names, contents and purpose, authorship of the book, and date of the Exodus. He also has a special section in which he discusses the so-called plagues, and one in which he discusses Moses as a person. Following the Introduction there is a verse-by-verse explanation of the text. This volume is filled with information and insight and is a valuable aid to any Bible student's library. |
