Résumé : |
The six short books of the Bible collected in this volume represent different aspects of Judaism, exemplify different types of literature, and recall vastly differing varieties of Jewish experience. Five of the books are traditionally connected with commemorative occasions in the Jewish year, while the sixth—the Book of Jonah —is a significant and meaningful part of the ritual on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
From a literary point of view, two of these books, Ruth and Esther—in both of which, curiously enough, the heroines are women—rank among the best short stories ever told. Another, Ecclesiastes (or Koheleth), is the work of a practical philosopher who viewed the world about him with tolerant despair. Yet this ancient existentialist encouraged his fellow denizens in this vale of futility to be sensible and accept their fate with calm and dignity. In contrast with Koheleth, the Song of Songs is a series of love poems, beautiful in then- imagery, touching in their tenderness, uplifting in their charm. Finally, there is the Book of Lamentations. It commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in a series of heartrending laments. Jews have always heard in it an echo of their centuries-long exile and persecution; yet woven into it are expressions of undying hope. Each of the books, as well as the volume as a whole, is prefaced by a brief scholarly introduction explaining its authorship, origin, and use in worship. The book is meant for private and public reading, at home and in the synagogue. |
