As Jane Stuart Smith and I were beginning to get acquainted about a quarter of a century ago, we learned that we had several common interests:—The love of good music, art, and books, particularly, the Bible. Cats, chickens, gardening, and bird watching came later. Then something else that drew us together, we both care very much for our families and friends.
Now after all these years have flown by and we have had the privilege of meeting many more people through L’Abri Fellowship, the LAbri Ensemble, and the exchange of letters because of our records, columns, hymns, and books, the circle of friendship has expanded. The purpose of this small book is to say, “God bless you, dear families and friends, and also to the new friends we might meet through A Merry Heart, —may you all know the blessing and goodness of being children of the Heavenly Father, not through any merit of our own, but because of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Both Jane and I love the sound of laughter, and we have learned the hard way that one cannot be cheerful every day, but it is helpful to recall that a merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.— Proverbs 17:22 - Betty Carlson (Huemoz, Switzerland, 12 July 1985) |
