Résumé : |
FROM TELEVANGELISM AND MORMONISM TO THE NATION OF ISLAM AND NEW AGE SPIRITUALITY, Patrick Allitt explores the full scope of religious expression in postwar America. Identifying the major trends and significant moments within major denominations and less formal religious movements, Allitt asks how religious groups have shaped and been shaped by some of the most important cultural, political, and theological issues and events of the last sixty years.
Allitt reveals the ways in which the boundaries between religious and political discourse have become increasingly blurred in the postwar era. Beyond denominational lines, religious Americans had come by the 1980s to be divided along political lines as they confronted the challenges of modernity and secularism. Partly due to this politicization and partly due to the growing presence of Asian, Latino, and other ethnic groups, the United States is anomalous among the Western industrialized nations in witnessing a growth in church membership and religious affiliation during the postwar era. Religion in America Since 1945 is a masterful analysis of this dynamism and diversity, offering an ideal background to understanding the contemporary religious scene. |
