This volume commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Formula of Concord, the last of the classic confessional documents from the formative age of Lutheranism. The Formula of Concord ended three decades of doctrinal controversy and established harmony within the Lutheran church.
Six theological essays, both critical and supportive, wrestle with such key issues as justification, original sin, sacraments, politics, liturgies, orthodoxy, confession, science, life, and truth. Six historical essays depict the response to the Formula of Concord by other Lutherans, Anglicans, Dutch Reformed, French Calvinists, and Roman Catholics.
