Résumé : |
‘As far as I am able to judge’, wrote Richard Baxter about the Westminster Assembly, ‘the Christian world, since the days of the apostles, had never a synod of more excellent divines than this.’
The Assembly, called by the English Parliament, met at Westminster from July 1, 1643, and was to produce some of the most influential documents in the English-speaking reformed churches. These included the Confession of Faith and the famous Shorter Catechism. Meeting regularly over a period of several years, the Assembly included men whose names have remained clearly etched in the annals of church history, such as William Twisse, the chairman; John Lightfoot the outstanding Hebrew scholar; Thomas Goodwin, the great Independent. Present too were representatives of the Church of Scotland, whose influence far outweighed their numerical strength: Alexander Henderson, ecclesiastical statesman; Samuel Rutherford, pastor, letter writer and controversialist; George Gillespie, still in his early thirties and a theological genius. Many of these men were outstanding preachers as well as theologians, pastors and evangelists as well as scholars. In this remarkable book, James Reid tells the stories of these formulators of the reformed faith - who they were, what they did, how they lived, what they thought. Memoirs of the Westminster Divines is a unique work, because it is many biographies in one. Its author regarded it as his own special contribution to the Christian church. Long out of print, it remains a book of immense fascination and both historical and spiritual value. |
