Résumé : |
Without parallel in the history of Christianity are the problems raised by the contact of the Gospel with Hinduism in India. What is the Christian’s response to the sacred books, sacred rites, well-structured religio-philosophical systems and religions with a claim to universality? What should be his attitude towards the rich heritage of the profound religious experience of Hinduism? Is he to accept it or reject it? Is it possible to integrate Hindu religious experience without compromising his faith? Indian theologians have sought an answer to these and similar problems.
This study offers a survey of Christian theological tendencies and problems in India arising from the meeting of Christianity with Hinduism. It outlines the subtle, intellectual approach of Panikkar, the pastoral concern of Amalorpavadass, the advaitic experience of Abhishiktănanda, the secular humanism of M. M. Thomas, a christology in an advaitic framework of Samartha and the theological endeavours of several others. |
