Résumé : |
Leo Strauss’ study of Spinoza’s religious philosophy is a three-part tour de force of analysis and comparison. Central to the book is a careful presentation of Spinoza’s epochal work, the Tractatus Theologicopoliticus, with its critique of orthodoxy, Maimonides, and Calvin, as well as Spinoza’s original discussions of revelation, the social function of religion, and biblical science. Professor Strauss sets the context for his study of Spinoza with an overview of the major current of critical controversy on religion, from Epicurus through Uriel da Costa to Thomas Hobbes. Finally, Professor Strauss’s long preface, an intellectual autobiography, will be of special interest to many readers: it traces his own development as a political philosopher from the dilemmas of a young intellectual in the Weimar Republic and Hitler’s Germany to the plight of a scholar in exile.
Printed as an afterword is an essay on the political theory of Carl Schmitt, who was to become a Nazi apologist. |
