Résumé : |
This book offers a much-needed perspective on the phenomenon of prophecy as it existed throughout the history of Israel and in early Judaism. Avoiding philosophical and theological presuppositions that dominated much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the author concentrates on the historical development of prophecy from the settlement in the land to the Hellenistic period.
Rather than simply providing bibliographical sketches of various prophets. Dr. Blenkinsopp explores the entire prophetic tradition and the place occupied in it by Elijah, Hosea, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Jonah, among others. He considers the place of the prophetic materials in the Hebrew Bible; the origin and early development of Israelite prophecy in the broader political and cultural context of the Near East; the different lines of development during the critical period of Assyrian and Babylonian hegemony; the crucial situation created for prophecy by the massive political disasters of the sixth century b.c.e.; the different attempts to provide a new basis for the restored community after the exile. Finally, he covers the period of the Second Temple, widely neglected in most studies of prophecy. Appearing after two centuries of intense critical examination of the biblical prophetic texts, A HISTORY OF PROPHECY IN ISRAEL is a “state of the art” book for teachers, preachers, and students alike. |
