A SHORT GUIDE TO THE MODEL OF ANCIENT JERUSALEM
The Model of Ancient Jerusalem in the grounds of the Holyland Hotei enables the visitor to visualise life in the city at the time of the Second Temple, before the Jewish revolt against the Romans and the destruction of the city in 70 C.E. It was reconstructed according to early and contemporary sources: Josephus, the Mishnah, the Talmud, the Tosephtha and the New Testament, as well as recent archaeological discoveries. The model was built to the scale 1:50 (2cms.=1m. Insofar as possible, the same building materials as were employed at the time, stone, marble, wood, copper and iron, were used. The construction of the model is due to the initiative and resources of the late Mr. Kroch. The archaeological and topographical data were supplied by the late Prof. M. Avi-Yonah of the Hebrew University, who also supervised the building of the model. Mrs. E. Avi-Yonah drew the plans, sections and facades of the whole model and most of the buildings. The execution was begun by the late Mr. E. Schaeffler and continued by Mr. R. Brotzen. Since the death of Prof. Avi-Yonah, the archaeological data in accordance with the latest excavations are continuously supplied by Dr. Y. Tsafrir of the Hebrew University, to be executed by the staff ably led by Mr. Ch. Peretz. |
