Résumé : |
What is it like to be an Orthodox Jew? To grow up wearing only black and always a hat and long earlocks? To spend seven hours every afternoon and evening from age three to eighteen in Hebrew School, memorizing the Torah, and studying the Talmud, the Midrash, the Mish-nah, and the Zohar till they are as familiar as the Scriptures themselves?
Michael Esses was the son of the rabbi with the largest congregation of Judean Jews in New York. In a home where parental authority was absolute and discipline was swift and sure, he remained an untamed rebel, getting back at his mother at age five by daily spread-eagling himself in the street on a manhole cover and waiting for some big truck to run him over, and trying to commit spiteful suicide a year later by sticking his thumb in a live light socket. But Mike loved his mother, more than anyone else in the world, and when she died suddenly, his whole world collapsed. The next blow came some years later. Now a rabbi himself, Mike was on the west coast, awaiting the arrival of his beloved kid brother, when the Texas Highway Patrol called with the news that his brother had been decapitated in an automobile accident. That was more than Michael’s faith could stand, and he streamed out his bitterness at God. In an agony of despair he called his father, who was able to say, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away/ Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Michael exploded and vowed never to speak to God again as long as he lived. What happens in the remaining two-thirds of the book is such an amazing, incredible spiritual adventure that it would be unfair to even hint at it. Suffice it to say that there has never been a Jewish— or Christian—book like it! |
