Jean Duvet, goldsmith to François I, undertook this series of twenty-three engravings with “death oppressing me and my hands trembling.” Duvet transferred the Revelations of St. John onto the metal plate in a manner so relentless and uncompromising that for centuries his work was dismissed as “inept” and “crude.” Today he is often cited as a unique predecessor of William Blake, and we are at last prepared to appreciate the emotional power of his crowded, violent compositions.
