Whereas the Word Biblical Commentary is designed for the scholar, the student, the seminarian, Word Biblical Themes are prepared for the busy pastor, Sunday school teacher, and the layperson. Their purpose is to provide an overview of a biblical volume, setting forth the theological themes of the book in a concise manner for practical application.
Dr. Gerald F. Hawthorne has done that for the Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians. In these pages, Dr. Hawthorne introduces today’s reader to the Roman colony of Philippi, an important city of Macedonia, in the northeast region of modern Greece. He dates this letter at A.D. 58 (or 60) and states Paul's reasons for writing it. Drawing upon his extensive research into first-century church life, the author describes for the reader the opponents Paul faces and, especially, Paul’s "encounter with Christ.” Then, in careful and logical sequence, he leads into a discussion of these seven themes in Philippians : The character of God; The providence of God and the problem of evil; The person of Christ; The Christ-hymn; The call to salvation; The Christian life; The note of joy. |
