Résumé : |
Schürer’s monumental history of the Jews in the time of Jesus was the first comprehensive history of this period; its section on literature is here presented complete and unabridged. Dividing the writings into two main branches, Palestinian-Jewish and Greco-Jewish, Schürer offers the background and scientific analyses of such texts as the Book of Maccabees, the pseudepigraphic prophecies, the Septuagint Bible, and the works of Philo and Josephus. The student will not only gain insight into a body of literature that delineates the tone of one of the most crucial periods of Jewish history but will come to understand the scholarly method pioneered by Schürer. The editor’s introduction discusses Schürer’s later major revisions and gives a brief account of post-Schürer research.
Emil Schürer ( 1844-1910) was a leading German Protestant scholai and Professor of New Testament. Nahum N. Glatzer is Samuel Lane Professor of History and Social Ethics at Brandeis University. A companion volume to A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus (schocken paperback SB8), presenting the political history of Palestine from the Maccabean revolt to the fall of Jerusalem. |
