Résumé : |
The tribes of Israel viewed the world and their lives in it as good and reflecting God’s interaction with them—unlike some early Christian teachings which tended to shun the world as evil. The Israelites did not applaud retreat into a spiritual world of noninvolvement. Rather, they were very much involved with the things of the world: its affairs, joys, and sorrows.
Walther Zimmerli brings this healthy Old Testament attitude back to life. He demonstrates its relevance for a modern world that is critically aware of social and ecological interdependencies— one that realizes man has to take part in the affairs of the world. The Old Testament depicts man as an integral part of all of creation, and redemption as encompassing all of tire world—not just humanity. This book is a study of the “worldly” philosophy of the Old Testament as the basis for a new understanding of the “worldliness” or secularization of modern religion. It was provoked by Rudolf Bultmann’s thesis that the Old Testament is significant for Christians only with respect to its “failure”—an idea Zimmerli refutes. Because the world was created by God for our enjoyment, Walther Zimmerli notes that people are both incorporated into the world and set to rule over it. These things are all part of God’s imperative blessing, which is our privilege and command: “Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it.” In fact, the entire Old Testament, in Zimmerli’s view, is concerned with man, that creature both “ennobled and endangered by Iris own freedom, yet destined to full involvement in the world.” Focusing on the human aspect of the Old Testament, Zimmerli explains Israel’s understanding of creation, marriage, man’s relation with nature, warfare, human ability, possession of land and goods, social organization, religious observances, attitudes toward life, death, and salvation, and Israel’s hope for the future, which in its developed form is a hope beyond death and at the same time a hope for the world. The author’s eye for detail and his taste for variety, color, and movement offer the reader an interesting blend of many sources: the ancient literature of many nations; the findings of modern study, research, and archaeology; and the Scriptures. Zimmerli’s valuable study leads to the conclusion that the Old Testament is more than law—and certainly more than the failure Bultmann thought it to be. The Old Testament is about hope and the future and is especially valuable to the Christian alive in today’s world. As Zimmerli explains: “... when the gospel of Christ allows itself to be explained from the Old Testament, then it realizes that it is sent into the world, to the humble and to the suffering, as also to those in power and responsible for the laws of the state and of society; and so it becomes clear that God, the Lord and the creator of the whole world, will not be venerated in the world as the one who is beyond at an awesome distance, but will be loved again as the one who has come to the world in love.” |
