Résumé : | This is the fascinating story of a unique people and their religion through 4,000 years. Dr Parkes, who is perhaps the foremost Christian authority on Jewish affairs, tells this story as ‘the successive or simultaneous encounter of Jewish people with different non-Jewish societies’. Beginning with the Kingdoms of Israel and Judea and the dispersion, he then treats the way of life of the Jews as they come into contact with Rome, Islam, medieval Christendom, secularism, and nationalism. The last chapter brings the account up to date with the heroic survival of a people in the face of persecution, and their rebirth in the new state of Israel. |
