Résumé : |
C. S. Lewis is the rarest kind of Christian apologist: agnostics, atheists, the multitudinous lapsed, believers—all read him with delight. Part of his appeal stems from Lewis's manifest modesty. He is not, after all, very impressed with himself. Part of it lies in his clear impatience with routine Christian prudery, his anger at Christian smugness, his disgust with lingering Puritanism. Much of it surely arises from the spectacle of a man whose belief gives him joy. Happy men have their own radiance. They give pleasure—and pleasure, Lewis knew, being contagious, is the best sermon.
Lewis described himself as a "converted pagan living among apostate Puritans" and a man who had taken as long to acquire inhibitions as others have needed to get rid of them. Clyde S. Kilby's anthology includes pungent and provocative ideas from all of Lewis's more than forty books as well as material from uncollected essays. There are quotations illuminating the nature of man and the moral imperative, God and the Christian commitment, love and sex, and what Lewis calls the "post-Christian" man. Recognized as a man of great learning, wit, and formidable logic, Lewis has exercised a profound influence on the quality of contemporary Christian belief. What is delivered in this book through Mr. Kilby's skill is a long report on the weather of Lewis's sensibility—or, if you will, the very table talk of his soul. |
