Résumé : |
An interesting and important development in the recent history of the United States is the rise of numerous holiness and pentecostal denominations. For many years little interest was shown in this development, and ‘holiness people’ were seen as relics of the nation’s frontier past.
Recent developments, however, have resulted in a mounting interest in both perfectionism and pentecostalism by theologians and the public alike. Perhaps the greatest interest has been generated by the rapid growth of the ‘charismatic’ movement inside the traditional denominations within the past decade. Virtually every major denomination now has its own pentecostal element, including the Roman Catholic Church. The Holiness-Pentecostal Movement, therefore, will be of interest to a wide spectrum of readers. Pentecostals will be interested in this in-depth study of their beginnings, while those in the neo-pente-costal or charismatic groups within the traditional denominations will be able to gain insights into the cultural lifestyles of the so-called ‘classic’ pente-costals. Methodists, and members of the non-pentecostal holiness groups, should find interest in the historic relationship between the Wesleyan movements and the pentecostal churches. The literature as well as the social relations and attitudes of the holiness-pentecostal groups are studied in depth, and particular attention has been given to the development of pentecostalism in the southern part of the United States. The Holiness Pentecostal Movement is not, however, an apologia for any one position, nor does it rely on extensive theological jargon. It is, rather, an informative and very readable history of the movement, together with a discussion and analysis of what has been accomplished by it. |
