Résumé : |
Drawing upon his White House experience, former presidential counsel Charles Colson begins his book with a terrifyingly realistic scenario in which a president elected on a “Christian” ticket must make a decision that could lead to Armageddon. From this gut-wrenching beginning to its ending in strife-torn Northern Ireland, Kingdoms in Conflict deals with some of the most bitterly contested issues of our day.
Do ministers have any business running for political office? What right does the Church have to tell people how to live? Who are these “religious fanatics” who are trying to take over the world? These are just some of the vital questions that alarmed Americans are asking and that Colson confronts. Power-hungry pulpiteers and religiously driven terrorists strike fear in the hearts of the general public. Meanwhile, loss of religious freedom, and the power of special-interest groups to erode the influence of the Judeo-Christian ethic so essential to democracy, cause Christians to despair. Never before has the conflict between Church and State been so widespread or had such far-reaching implications for every citizen, says Colson, as he issues a challenge to religious leaders as well as a warning to those who would obliterate all religious influence from society. Much of the conflict, he maintains, is the result of misunderstanding. “The problem is that humanists fail to understand human nature and Christians fail to understand Christ’s teaching about His kingdom.” Colson weaves dramatic stories with powerful insights to explode the myths and explore the realities of religion and politics. Venturing into the corridors of power he knows so well—in both government and the Church—he sounds a prophetic warning about the dangers of either a politicized or a privatized faith. He tackles head on such issues as Christians in politics, civil disobedience, the corrupting influence of power, and the danger of the Church becoming hostage to political forces when proper perspective is lost. In doing so, Colson does what no one else has done. He shows the secularist why Christians who truly understand the kingdom of God should be the most responsible of all citizens and why society cannot afford to be without them. Charles Colson is uniquely qualified to shatter political illusions. In a sense, his entire life has been lived in preparation for this book. Soldier, lawyer, statesman, prisoner, theologian, Christian leader- all of these diverse experiences have shaped his vitally important message. In his compelling argument for the separate roles of Church and State, he offers reality and hope to a world in conflict. |
