| Résumé : | Written over a period of nearly four decades, they reflect a continuing, vital, and meaningful connection with the substance of Judaism and the enduring challenge that Judaism presents to Christianity. The five essays in this book are "The Son of Man," in which Baeck traces the development of this concept from its origins with the prophets of Israël until it is transformed by the early Church into an otherworldly conception; “The Gospel as a Document of the History of the Jewish Faith," which explores how the Christian faith began along biblical-rabbinic Iines but was diverted by Paul, who introduced into it the mystery of the dying and rising god; "The Faith of Paul," an intensive analysis and critique of Pauline theology; "Mystery and Commandment," characterizing Judaism as a perfect combination of faith in the everlasting Presence and devotion to a way of life revealed as the means of consecrating creation; and the last and most trenchant essay, "Romantic Religion," which hypostatizes the essence of Christianity as romantic religion — sentimental, fantastic, ecstatic, centered upon redemptive grâce—and Judaism as the classical religion, in which mystery is counterbalanced by commandment, faith by obligation, individual salvation by the redemption of history and its submission to the will of God. |
