What is the Jewish attitude toward Jésus, and why? The work of a professional scholar, this book is written in a non-technical way for the layman. The author, an American Jew, a specialist and scholar in New Testament, sets forth candidly and forthrightly both where Jews have stood and where they stand today. Fie writes with warm sympathy for Christianity—a sympathy he has evidenced in numerous earlier writings —but at the same time with sturdy intellectual honesty and loyalty to Judaism, His context is the welcome growth of religions understanding and co-operation between Jews and Christians. In that context he describes the what and why of the Jewish attitude toward Jésus. An informed book, it is in no way an assault on Christianity, but a dispassionate exposition of the Jewish dissent.
Dr. Sandmel begins with a review of pre-modern Jewish approaches. This is followed by a fresh discussion of the subject from the standpoint of a rabbi of the liberal wing of Judaism, presented in the light of the scholarship of the last century and a half as pursued by both Christians and Jews. Finally, the author makes clear where he thinks Jews today should stand on the question of Jésus, explaining why Jésus is of cultural and historical interest to Jews, though not of direct religions interest. Dr. Sandmel’s clear and forceful exposition will be of value as a guide, both to Christians and to Jews, and is especially timely and relevant in view of present-day ecumenical discussions and actions. |
