Résumé : |
What became Christianity started out as a movement within Judaism. It was not long, however, before the two began to diverge. Yet in some ways they remained joined at the hip, although ultimately going their separate ways.
This book attempts to describe that process—the “partings”—plural. It was a complicated, even messy process. The basic premise of this book is that the parting occurred in different ways in different places and at different times. Thus, more than one parting. Or did they ever really part? To those who say our book is not well organized, I reply that that is because our subject is not well organized. We have not identified a single storyline around which to describe a process that occurred over approximately half a century and more, from the birth of the Jesus movement in Jerusalem to the Byzantine period—and even beyond, to modern times. The subject can be approached in numerous ways—historical, ideological, archaeological, theological, geographical (e.g., how and when the parting occurred in Rome or Egypt), or from the viewpoint of specific events, like the supposed Christian flight to Pella or the change of the Christian holy day from the Sabbath to Sunday. Why I included one subject and excluded another can be considered arbitrary or simply a misjudgment. And those who dig intensively into this volume will notice some (though mostly minor) differences among the scholars I have included. That is surely an expectable part of the picture. But what is presented here should be enough to give the reader (and student) a broad understanding of the subject, guided by the insights of world-class scholars. While we cannot claim to be exhaustive, I hope we can at least claim to be incisive. |
