Résumé : | If there can be “No poetry after Auschwitz,” there is all the more reason why there must be theology. The reality of the Holocaust has posed the most fundamental questions about the nature of God and His providence, questions that have shaken the religious mind far more devastatingly than did the destruction of Jerusalem, the early persecutions of Christians, the close of the first millennium of the Christian era, or the Lisbon earthquake. Hitherto, that challenge has been taken up primarily by Jewish philosophers and religious thinkers. Now, in Discerning the Way, a Christian theologian not only reflects on the burden of the Holocaust and the significance of the State of Israel but makes these events the cornerstones of the reconstruction of Christian theology—and shows that the Gentile Church has been called by the one God of Israel through the Jew Jesus of Nazareth to join the Jewish people on a path through history. Together they are, in their distinctive ways, to cooperate with God in the work of completing His unfinished creation. The implications of this new Christian understanding of the Jewish reality are then explored with regard to the nature of God, including the doctrine of the Trinity, of revelation, of the Bible and its authority, of the Church and its hope. Throughout, the author addresses himself, both in the style and the structure of the book, to the theologian as well as to the religiously concerned general reader. |
