Résumé : |
For centuries, Christian churches and theology have sought to define their identity by challenging Judaism. Christians often questioned whether Israel is still the people of God and whether the church has replaced Israel. An affirmative response to the latter question is often referred to as the “theology of substitution,” which suggests that the church has taken Israel’s place. This implies that there is no longer a role for Israel in God’s plan of salvation. The history of Christian anti-Judaism starkly illustrates the violent potential inherent in this theology. After Auschwitz, finding an alternative to this theology has become essential, as it strikes at the heart of Christianity.
The central question of this book is whether—and how—Christianity can maintain its identity without understanding itself as a substitute for Judaism. How can one affirm their own faith while respecting the convictions of others? If Jews see themselves as a chosen people, as the Bible explicitly states, and Christians view Jesus as the unique savior of humanity, how should Jews and Christians engage with one another? Is there a foundation within Christianity and Judaism to attribute salvific value to another religion? In a pluralistic world, can Christians and Jews collaborate to realize God’s Kingdom on Earth? Didier Pollefeyt highlights how the theme of substitution poses a fundamental theological challenge for Christians in their interactions with Judaism. Bertold Klappert proposes an alternative to the theology of substitution, drawing from the work of Protestant theologians. Leon Klenicki presents a Jewish perspective, working to develop a theory of dialogical encounter between Jews and Christians. Terence Merrigan reflects on how the Christian rediscovery of Judaism can hold significance amid the postmodern challenge of religious pluralism. Rik Hoet analyzes biblical metaphors that may serve as alternatives to the theology of substitution. |
