The present volume continues the general structural pattern of the first: it organizes the contents according to major periods and combines within each period both interpretive exposition and original documents. As in the previous work, historical interpretation comprises roughly a third of the text, and the remainder reproduces primary sources. The years herein covered (1820-1960) witnessed remarkable growth in church membership among both Roman Catholics and Protestants. These years also saw vast social changes provoked not only by the dynamic forces of urbanization and industrialization but by a convulsive North-South conflict and two world wars. Meanwhile, the American mind encountered unprecedented developments in scientific, social, philosophical, and religious thought. Variant forms of radicalism, moderatism, and conservatism vigorously competed for the allegiance of men. Only as these sharp crosscurrents are explored in their full dimensions may one come to understand the moral and religious phenomena of modern American culture. |
