Résumé : |
The history of Bible scholarship within the American evangelical community began in the 1880s, when evangelicals emerged as conservative descendants of revivalist nineteenth-century Protestantism. Mark A. Noll notes that this history must balance the intellectual neutrality of the professional academic community with the childlike faith of the belief community. Evangelical scholars navigate both worlds, with the interaction between them shaping the context of this subject.
The narrative of these clashing communities consists of two main stories. First, traditional Bible believers competed as partners in academic discussions from 1880 to 1900, then retreated to a faith-centered perspective until around 1935. From 1935 to 1950, they began to see the value of re-engaging with the wider world, developing strategies to reintegrate into academia from 1940 to 1975. Since 1960, they have faced new spiritual and intellectual challenges stemming from their successes. This accounts for the broader history of late nineteenth-century American Protestant conservatism, the fundamentalist movement, and the emergence of a new evangelicalism. |
