Résumé : | Students of medieval Europe often trace the ideas of their subjects into modern European history, just as the sources of modern European thought can be traced back to medieval Europe. Mr. Ozment's book, the first in a new series on Modern Scholarship in European History, is intended for any reader curious about the continuity between the medieval and modern worlds. Its nine essays represent five countries and two generations of scholarship. Six of the essays appear here for the first time in English. Three areas of research are covered: the intellectual climate of Europe on the eve of the Reformation (essays by Gerhard Ritter, Bernd Moeller, and Frantisek Graus); late medieval scholasticism and the Reformation (essays by Paul Vignaux, Heiko A. Oberman, and Steven E. Ozment); and late medieval spirituality and the Reformation (essays by R. R. Post, Alexandre Koyré, and Heiko A. Oberman). This is a richly rewarding collection, edited by a brilliant young medieval historian. |
