Résumé : |
The Diaspora Story is Joan Comay's scholarly and wide-ranging account of the fluctuating fortunes of the Jewish people over the last nineteen centuries of their dispersion (Diaspora). It is an intensely human story of tragedy and triumph, of inexpressible suffering and exultant joy. In the countries where the Jews settled, they were a minority, subject to the whims of the rulers and the populace. In times of crisis, they became victims of mass slaughter. During periods of relative calm, they contributed their gifts to surrounding societies, gaining renown in economics, politics, and the arts and sciences. Yet, at all times, they clung to their faith and traditions, never forgetting their roots. The survival of this tiny and ancient nation, against almost impossible odds, and the preservation of their religious and national identity are dramatic phenomena unique in history. The concept and illustrations are based on the permanent exhibits at the award-winning Beth Hatefutsoth - Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora. |
