Résumé : | The Liturgy of St. James is one of the oldest of primitive liturgies. It came into use in the Church of Malabar in the middle of the 17th century. Abrahan Malpan achen made certain alterations in this liturgy, without changing its main structure, in the light of the Biblical truths (theology) which guided him. He also began the practice of celebrating Holy Communion in Malayalam, translating the prayers directly from the Syriac version. The first translation of the Syriac liturgy into Malayalam was the one made by the very Rev. Kovoor Ipe Thoma Kathanar. It has undergone certain verbal alterations in course of time. An official Malayalam translation of the liturgy was published by the Most Rev. Titus II Mar Thoma in 1942. About 10 years later a committee of the Synod of the Church worked at a revision of the liturgy and it was published in 1954 as ‘Synod Thaksa’. The most important change introduced in the Synod Thaksa is in the alternative form given for the Epiclesis and in the formula used at the time of the serving of the Elements to the people. |
