Résumé : |
This book traces the beginnings of God's call of a people from Abraham and Sarah to authentic renewal movements today. John Driver shows how the Christian and Anabaptist emphasis on community and mission has emerged from Scripture foundations.
Since early Christian times, God’s people have considered the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 to 7 as basic teaching material of God's community. The second half of this book explores the radical agenda of these passages for Christians today. John Driver candidly cuts through the maze of tradition and presents a fresh report on the Christian story and agenda. Not all will agree, but all will be stimulated by this authentic voice of renewal and Christian faithfulness. This book is the first in a series of eight studies in The Foundation Series for Adults. |

- Foreword
UNIT A - TAKING ROOT AND BRANCHING OUT: The Anabaptist emphasis on peoplehood has emerged from scriptural foundations. This unit is a survey of God's call of a people from Abraham to present-day renewal movements. - 1. The Roots of Peoplehood: The call of Abraham (Gen. 12:1-4) tells the story of how God began his work with a people. - 2. Growing into Peoplehood: Liberated from Egyptian bondage by the mighty acts of God, the redeemed community became a covenant community at Sinai. - 3. Preparing for the True Vine: During the period of the kings and the exile when faith and hope were low, the prophets pointed to a Messiah of peace and justice. - 4. The True Vine Appears: Through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, Jesus clarified and focused God's vision for the people of God. - 5. Branching Out at Pentecost: Pentecost begins a new era for the people of God, both in the quality of life together and in reaching out to include all the people of the world. - 6. Branching Out in Renewal Movements: Repeatedly throughout history the world has been stirred by groups of Christians who caught afresh glimpse of God's intention for his people. - 7. Branching Out Through Anabaptism: The Anabaptist heritage has contributed a unique vision of peoplehood, discipleship. Bible interpretation, and mission under God. UNIT B - THE AGENDA OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD: The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 to 7 has been considered as basic teaching material of the Christian community. This unit is a Bible study of this agenda. - 8. Becoming Salt and Light: God's people become a missionary people by being salt and light in their societies. The Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount describe this life and its values. Matthew 5:1-16 - 9. Called to a Higher Righteousness: Jesus moved God's covenant law to it full intention. He gave God’s people new approaches to issues such as anger, marital infidelity, divorce, and falsehood. Matthew 5:17-37. - 10. Practicing Nonresistant Love: Jesus' answer to human violence is the community of peace. Matthew 5:38-48 - 11. Learning to Pray: Worship is celebrating the new reality of God's kingdom. A reflection on the Lord's Prayer can help us better understand true piety and life among God's people. Matthew 6:1 -24. - 12. Seeking God’s Kingdom Without Anxiety: The people of God dare to trust God for both their life and survival.
