| Résumé : | The mature Luther portrayed here challenges the powers of Europe with incredible boldness and an unswerving sense of mission, persisting in his determination to reform the Church. With equal passion he pursues his translation of the Hebrew Bible into German, an accomplishment that renewed the German language and encouraged literacy all over Europe. In his later years, however, he becomes irascible and hard to deal with, his emotional state worsening after his near death in 1537. Professor Haile discusses Luther's decline as frankly as he does his achievements and movingly describes his last months and his death in Eisleben in 1546. |
