Résumé : |
This volume brings together passages from Martin Luther’s preaching on the greatest of all sermons, the Sermon on the Mount. Especially for reflective reading, Martin E. Marty has chosen, from the imposingly large body of Luther’s collected works, some of his richest spiritual thinking. Under Luther’s inspiration, we come to grasp more fully the sense of trust expressed by Jesus as he urged his followers to ‘’behold the birds of the air” and to “consider the lilies of the field.” Luther eloquently and instructively reflects upon Jesus' message and the images he used; the preacher brings insights and parallels from his own experience to make new again the text of Matthew, so well-known to many, as we approach the place of trust.
Martin Marty has arranged Luther’s words under three main topics: trust, prayer, and the Beatitudes. In these pages, admirably suited to meditative reading, Luther speaks with the warmth and directness of a pastor and teacher. The nonscholar and nonexpert can read Luther here and understand better the trust that is at the root of faith. This is not a historical or literary treatment of Luther’s preaching; it is food for the soul. As Marty points out, “We come to it not as critics, but as people in search of the place of trust.” Here are the words of a sensitive pastor giving perhaps the best commentary ever on the Sermon on the Mount. In his insightful introduction, Martin Marty discusses some of what people today have learned about the role of trust and examines how such contemporary understanding gives even more depth to Luther’s words. |
