Résumé : |
There is now hope of a new day in Catholic-Protestant relations. But there remains the problem of the significance of the Reformation, which may be expressed in the question: which was the real Luther ? Published during the Second Vatican Council, this constructive statement by America's leading Luther expert has a world-wide importance, for it opens up new possibilities of a Catholic-Protestant reconciliation at the theological level.
Professor Pelikan shows that Luther was more Catholic than many of his Roman Catholic opponents, because the Reformation was based on a critical reverence towards the Christian tradition. In one field alter another we see the rebel as the true conservative, who believes that tradition is alive and deserves to be renewed. Despite the separation from Rome in Luther's age, all the vital ‘Catholic substance’ is needed if the true ‘Protestant principle’ is to be worked out today. We are summoned to seek again the ecumenical integration of the Church and the Faith. |
