Résumé : |
Although the results of the early church fathers’ doctrinal arguments remain, the framework of learning and discourse to which such arguments belonged has died out. How therefore 1 do the results of their deliberations—the Nicene Creed or Chalcedonian Definition—remain valid or even logical today? The logic of the patristic arguments which led to the formulation of Christian doctrine is viewed here from ; the standpoint of its validity and meaning in contemporary terms.
The author begins by emphasizing the difference between contemporary and traditional approaches to the study of doctrinal development. Turning to the vital period of the early church fathers, he summarizes the three main motives for the development of doctrine at that stage as the apologetic motive—the need to answer the objections to Christianity in a predominantly non-Christian world, the need to tackle the problem of heresy within the church itself, and the natural desire of some Christians to think out their faith more deeply. Mr Wiles then considers the main sources of doctrinal reasoning -scripture, the practice of worship, and the nature of salvation. Indeed, the belief that a close relationship existed between doctrine and salvation made doctrinal definition not only inevitable but vital to all. |
