Résumé : |
The Christian tradition was originally oral. Conceivably, trustworthy information about Jesus could have survived outside the Bible. But did it ? The question, fascinating in itself, has an immediate bearing on the problem of authority for the Christian religion and for the churches today, and Dr Hanson believes that if we attend to New Testament and patristic studies the evidence will compel us to come to certain conclusions which are clearer than we might expect.
This survey, going down to a.d. 300, considers the transmission of the Gospel material in the light of our knowledge about Rabbinic and Gnostic methods; the apocryphal sayings of Jesus; the evidence of a discipline) arcani among the early Christians; the emergence of creeds in the teaching Church; the relation of the ‘rule of faith’ to Scripture in the thought of the Fathers; the authority for ecclesiastical customs; the apostolic succession of bishops; the canon and status of the New Testament; and interpretative tradition as discussed in modern theology. Such material has never before been brought together by an English theologian. Scholars will find this book richly detailed, and students will value its clarity as a text-book. |
