Résumé : |
Evangelism reflects the health curve of the Church. The degree to which Christianity is evangelistic is the degree to which it is genuinely Christian. The lifeline of the Church from one generation to the next is evangelism.
In this study, the historical thread of the spirit of militant Christianity is traced from the beginning of the Christian era. One pronounced feature that shows up is that God has a man in every century to be His instrument for heralding His gospel. When circumstances seemed darkest, there was always a star of hope or a rainbow' of promise beaming forth from the Sun of Righteousness to point wayward mankind to the luminous trail that led to Father and home. The influence of evangelism has been so relevant to the needs of each generation that the witnesses for Christ have become involved in the trends of the time, without becoming absorbed by those trends; they have identified themselves with the spiritual needs of the people without allowing Christianity to lose its distinctiveness; they have been responsibly sensitive to the problems of their fellow-man and then set in motion those forces that would transform their fellowman. Over and over, historical evidence proves that the Holy Spirit is doing everything compatible with free moral agency to establish a constituency. At the same time, the tinder is always resident in each age for a mighty spiritual awakening, if the Holy Spirit can find the proper channels to work through to accomplish His purposes. |
